Avoid unexpected downtime with fuel level sensor

30 March, 2018

With the installation of fuel level sensors on their tanks, Atlas Copco Rental Europe provides customers with a tool to prevent downtime due to unexpected fuel shortage. The sensor measures the absolute pressure in the tank and sends out warnings to supervisors and end-customers when predefined levels are reached. This telemetry system will not only help to prevent future downtime, but as a result, it also reduces costs and improves sustainability.

Unexpected installation’s downtime can be caused by a lack of fuel in the tanks, but it is not easy to track the amount of fuel left in a machine. Therefore, Atlas Copco Rental Europe has installed the fuel level sensor Netris®2 in its fuel tanks, which remotely measures and collects data, and sends it to the cloud. End-customers and Atlas Copco Rental Europe supervisors can access a web portal, Oil Link™, to view, analyze and export all data. The portal shows overviews of fuel consumption and allows users to set alarms when predefined levels are reached. The combination of the sensor and the web platform makes data available anytime, anywhere. Therefore, it does not only prevent sudden downtimes, it also reduces transport cost and improves sustainability:
  • Transport-related CO2 emissions will be lower since meter-reading trips occur less often;
  • Planning refueling schedules can be optimized;
  • A detailed visualization of customer’s consumption is available.

Atlas Copco Rental Europe already has 15 fuel tanks equipped with the sensor, and many more will follow in the coming months. Engineers are installing the telemetry system on four different types of fuel tanks: AD blue 1000 l, IBC 3000 l, FT 5500 l and FT 8700 l. The sensor measures the absolute pressure at the bottom of the tank that is composed of the atmospheric pressure and the liquid pressure due to the height of the fuel. End-customers and Atlas Copco Rental Europe supervisors can access this ready to use data on the web platform.
