Team Collaboration to Enhance the Value of Rental Service

In February 2013 the No.4 power reactor unit of the QinShan Nuclear Power Plant, China, undertook its first large-scale maintenance, including dome pressure testing. Atlas Copco Rental's local team recommended a solution including 4 packages of PTS916 oil-free portable air compressors, dryers and filters.

The QinShan Nuclear Power Plant is the first 300MW Pressure Water Reactor nuclear power plant which was designed, constructed, and is managed independently by China National Nuclear Corporation. In February 2013 the power reactor unit (600MW) undertook its first maintenance.

Since the nuclear power industry has long cooperated with Atlas Copco in many countries, when the project team set the plan of this first maintenance they contacted Atlas Copco Rental in China. In order to have an early understanding of the requirements, a first visit to the site took place in July 2012. The technicians indicated the need for a pressure of 8 bar and air delivery of 5,000 m³/hour for the dome pressure testing. As the test requires a large amount of air to rapidly simulate pressure increasing inside of the dome, the compressed air should be 100% oil free and the dew point -40°C.

Atlas Copco Rental recommended a solution including 4 packages of PTS916 oil-free portable air compressors + dryers + filters which is a perfect fit to the requirements of the project. At the same time, this type of air compressor has a standard configuration including weatherproof canopy, spark arrestor, built-in cooler, overload protection system and high safety configurations satisfying the tough equipment and safety standards of the QinShan Nuclear Power Plant.

For nuclear power plants, dome testing is mandatory, and security cannot be overlooked. A risk factor of 1% is unacceptable. All units were in place late February 2013, which was a challenge since this is at the time of the Chinese New Year’s Festival making it hard to organize everything from logistics to commissioning and operators on site. For this project everyone worked hard to ensure efficient coordination, satisfying the demand of the customer while guaranteeing quality of the deliverables. In mid-February the customer was really satisfied with the pre-service provided and looking forward to the smooth continuation of the project. Already then the QinShan project team was confident that Atlas Copco Rental is the best choice for such maintenance!
