How to maintain your DSS scroll pumps: Tips for Optimal Performance and Longevity

How dry scroll vacuum pumps work

The high-quality materials used in the DSS 065 give it an extended lifetime and make for easy maintenance as demonstrated in the video and steps below -



STEPS

                   

Step 1: Disassemble inlet valve and gas ballast

  • Unscrew the bolts
  • Disassemble the inlet valve assembly
  • Beware that the spring might cause harm once released
  • Disassemble the gas ballast
  

Step 2: Disassemble front cover

  • Remove blanking plugs and O-ring from the front plate
  

Step 3: Disassemble inlet filter and cover plate 

  • Remove the filter support and the inlet filter
  • Remove cover and O-ring from the OS groove

Step 4: Disassemble balance weight 

  • Remove the bolt and washer
  • Remove the balance weight
  

Step 5: Remove anti-rotation assembly

  • Remove the anti-clash ring and bolts
  • Remove orbit scroll anti rotation assembly

Step 6: Remove OS and replace tip seal 

  • Replace tip seal every 2 years (minor service) and orbit scroll every 4 years (major service)
  • Start from the short end of the tip seal
  • Clean the bur at the starting tip of the tip seal
  • Start from the end that is near to the centre
  • Cut the extra tip seal 5 cm before the end
  • Fit another tip seal
  

Step 7: Replace FS tip seal

  • Follow similar procedure as OS tip seal replacement to replace the FS tip seal

Step 8: Assemble OS and anti-rotation

  • Assemble the anti clash ring
  • Check orientation such that the inscription front must be facing towards you
  

Step 9: Assemble balance weight

  • Align the slot and shaft key

Step 10: Assemble and regrease cover plate

  • Insert the adapter and use a syringe to push the new grease inside
  • Regrease is needed only during minor service
  

Step 11: Assemble inlet filter

  • Insert the filter support and the inlet filter
  • Direction of the arrows on the filter must correspond to the air flow of pump (towards the centre of the scroll)

Step 12: Assemble cover plate

  • Assemble the blanking plugs
  • Add the O-ring to the front cover groove
  

Step 13: Assemble inlet valve and gas ballast

  • Assemble the gas ballast
  • Assemble the inlet valve assembly
  • It is important to tighten the screws in order

  1. To limit the compression at higher inlet pressure by the pump, there are two blow off valves in between the stages.
  2. The pump is not suitable for hazardous gases. The pump must only be used for non-hazardous applications.
  3. Potential hazards on the dry pumps include electricity, hot surfaces, process chemicals.
  4. The pump must be connected to a suitably fused and protected electrical supply and a suitable Earth (ground) point.
  5. Make sure that the motor is configured correctly for your electrical supply.
  6. Make sure that the direction of rotation of the pump is correct before you operate the pump.
  7. Make sure that your system can provide sufficient gas ballast and/or inlet purge to dilute toxic gases to safe limits.
  8. At high temperatures the tip seal wear product will begin to decompose, giving rise to gaseous fumes that can produce unpleasant symptoms.
  9. Leak test the system after installation and seal all the leaks found.
  10. Allow the pump to warm up and use full gas ballast and inlet purge before pumping condensable vapors.
  11. Purge the pump before you shut it down.
  12. We recommend major pump overhaul after 32000 hours.
  13. Dispose of the pumps in accordance with all national and local safety and environmental guidelines.
