5 Tips and tricks for an optimal air compressor installation

November 11, 2024

The compressor room plays an essential role in any compressed air system. Whether it’s a dedicated space specifically designed for the compressor or a multi-purpose area, certain conditions must be met to maximize the efficiency of your air compressor installation.

Regular maintenance and necessary repairs are essential for ensuring optimal performance. By following these tips and tricks, you not only enhance efficiency but also increase safety in your air compressor operations.

1. Keep things cool with ventilation

Compressors generate heat. In an enclosed space, this heat could build up and cause overheating. That’s why correctly dimensioned ventilation with the right number of openings is needed. Keep in mind seasonal temperature fluctuations to avoid freezing in winter. Also make sure the ventilation doesn’t bring dust to the compressor air inlet. If necessary, add dust filters to the ventilation, or install ducts to supply clear air and remove the heat.

2. Leave room for service

Space is precious. However, for reliable performance, compressed air equipment needs to be serviced from time to time. Therefore, it’s important to leave enough space for a service technician to have good access to the machine, be able to use service tools and bring in components. A good indication for minimal free space is the width of a pallet on each side of the compressor. Access from the top is important too. Cramped overhead space could again cause overheating.

3. Foresee the facilities

Some utility rooms are built around the equipment. If that is the case, don’t forget to include an access gate. For some interventions, a crane is required. If there isn’t one installed, Atlas Copco can bring in a mobile crane, but only if there is enough space to mount it.

4. The downside of heights

Some equipment is installed at height. This comes with some disadvantages. Access is usually more difficult and less safe. Make sure the platforms are generously spaced for a technician to move around the equipment safely. To lift heavy components, foresee a lifting crane of a scissor lift. And remember what we said about cramped overhead space causing overheating? Use extra ventilation if necessary.

5. Build in safety

The layout of the utility will either ensure safe conditions for maintenance personnel, or cause extra risks. Hoses or cables crossing a passageway create a tripping hazard. When connecting the equipment, closely follow the tolerances and recommendations. When in doubt, your compressor manufacturer can advise you. When installing drains, make sure the water can get away. In short, always keep in mind the safety of service technicians. They take care of your compressor. Take good care of them in return.
