UKAS Accredited Tool and Equipment Calibration

Our UKAS accredited calibration service will improve your product quality whilst simultaneously lowering your cost. Calibrations can be carried out in our certified laboratory or on-site at our customers location, providing flexibility to your operations. Efficient quality control begins with the calibration of your torque and measurement equipment.

Atlas Copco Tools & Industrial Assembly Solutions, has achieved two landmark approvals from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), for the calibration of electrically powered assembly tools, both at its dedicated calibration facility and at customer manufacturing sites.

Atlas Copco is the first and currently, the only company, to have secured this type of UKAS accreditation.

UKAS Accredited

Our accredited laboratory can perform calibration of electrically powered and controlled torque devices (DC Tools) from 0.2 N⋅m to 5000 N⋅m according to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. We can offer this service at our permanent facility or customer’s location with the same quality assurance.

Authorised Technicians

Our approved technicians are competent and trained to accurately calibrate your torque instruments according to national and international standards, with full knowledge of industry requirements.

What are the benefits?

Accredited Quality Assurance Calibration provides traceability assurance and minimises risk of rework, warranty, recall costs, liability claims or reputation damage.

Nicolas Van Zyl - Calibration Laboratory Manager

Nicolas has over 20 years of experience within the bolting and tightening industry working with tightening tools and solutions, as well as developing and designing automated tightening systems.

Having implemented quality systems (ISO9001) as well as three ISO17025 accredited laboratories, including the very 1st in the world accreditation for hydraulic tensioners, he has become an expert in his field.

As the UK Calibration Laboratory Manager and Atlas Copco Calibration Master Trainer, Nic will run the UK calibration service whilst supporting our other customer centres across the globe with specific training.

"I have embraced every opportunity i have had so far, to become as knowledgeable as possible in the field of Torque, Force Metrology and all of it's disciplines"

The big questions

Why is calibration important, and how does it affect quality?

Any instrument used to make some sort of measurement, or tool that is set to achieve a target measurement will have an error. Calibration is the method to determine the size of the error. The determined error can be inside of allowable parameters or it could be outside, how far outside will decide if the error will have minor quality issues associated with it such as a rattle, or major impacts that could lead to injury or loss of life.

How often should you calibrate?

Calibration frequencies should be determined based on each applications risk associated with false results. For example, you could look at the amount of fastenings a tool completes per shift to determine the calibration period. Or base it on how safety/quality critical the joint is! Dropped or overloaded tools, should also be sent for recalibration. Manufacturing facilities who conform to ISO9001 or IATF16949 will have a procedure for the calibration of their instruments. For some regulatory industries this frequency could be every 3 to 6 months, and others every 12 months. Every application and process is different, which is why we work closely with you to develop the best strategy.

Why is angle important as well?

The majority of torque tightening processes in industry, that are safety critical, don't just rely on a torque value to determine if the joint is OK or Not OK. By including accurate angle measurements you can achieve a more reliable measurement of torque and clamping force achieved. When it comes to safety critical tightening’s, torque and angle work hand-in-hand together. Industry understands this connectivity, and we're sure more laboratories will start calibrating the angle parameters of torque instruments as we do.

What is UKAS Accreditation?

UKAS is the national body in the UK, responsible for carrying out assessments and giving accreditation to organisations that provide calibrations, testing, inspection etc to industry. We are currently accredited by UKAS to international standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for mechanical and electronic wrenches, torque transducers and torque testers.

What does "Traceable to UKAS" mean?

Traceable results typically mean that the results supplied can be traced back to another lab, testing facility etc where their reference equipment was UKAS accredited or traceable. We offer calibration to this level for pneumatic and electric (DC/Battery) powered tools, which also includes microtorque equipment!

What sustainable process have you implemented?

The Atlas Copco UK lab is 99% digital, making use of software platforms to record, store and supply results. We try to not make use of printers to save paper and the environment. The only printing being done is the calibration sticker placed on the instrument after calibration.
