Atlas Copco’s technology for hydrogen generation
With almost 150 years of experience in compressed air and gas solutions for a wide cross-section of industries and applications, and as a global leader in sustainable solutions, Atlas Copco has been investing in technology to support the emerging green hydrogen sector in its journey towards becoming mainstream.
Atlas Copco technology plays a vital role in powering the drive for decarbonisation and energy transition involving hydrogen production, transportation, and usage.
Atlas Copco’s range of hydrogen oil-free boosters, hydraulic oil-free boosters, and piston boosters are designed for mobility and ease of installation. Engineered with a modular design to ensure reliability and optimum uptime for the user, Atlas Copco hydrogen compression technology comes fully tested and functional to support the trucks and ground transport, trains and rail transport, airports, and aviation sectors in their mission to supply cleaner fuel for a sustainable future, as well as serving the power-to-gas market.
As a market leader in air and gas compression systems, one of Atlas Copco’s recent projects was to supply a plug-and-play, 3-stage oil-free hydraulic booster to increase stored hydrogen gas pressure to 450bar, as part of a compression system for storage and filling of high-pressure, fuel-cell grade green hydrogen for aircraft.
The oil-free booster is hydraulically driven and based on a simple hydrostatic transmission principle. Units can be used as compressors/boosters to fill and then intake gas from high-pressure storage in order to achieve a high flow rate in direct fill.
Configured to operate in exposed environments, packaged units can be supplied complete with a closed-loop cooling system and controller, all housed within a weatherproof container.
