Martin Karlsson works as Head of Tightening Tools in Atlas Copco’s Motor Vehicle Industry division that designs assembly solutions for the automotive industry. In 2019, he saw the opportunity to initiate an in-house Research School which would connect, support and act as a home for PhD students doing academic research in Atlas Copco’s Industrial Technique business area, driving industry research forward.
“The mission of our Research School is to provide co-learning opportunities in a safe environment – bridging academia and industry. We offer our students a top-class education and the possibility to learn from different actors in the field, both academically and from our customers and industrial partners,” Martin says.
The Research School collaborates with renowned competence centers and some of Sweden’s most prestigious universities.

Apart from fruitful external partnership, the Research School gives students the possibilities to reflect and share their experiences, and to build their knowledge and skills in areas such as communication, self-leadership, intellectual property, negotiation and sustainability. Another advantage is the chance to try out theories on real-life applications, connected to leading players in the motor vehicle industry.
The research can cover all aspects of industrial design and manufacturing, like ergonomics, data analytics, friction modelling and artificial intelligence vision.
