Meet Mayank Kumar, PhD student in System and Component Design
Curious to learn more about threaded fastener joints and friction modelling? Meet Mayank Kumar – one of the PhD students in the Research School within Industrial Technique.
What is your area of research?
I’m doing my PhD in System and Component Design at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. My thesis is called ‘The effect of friction during tightening of the bolted joint’.
How can that help customers and the society?
Understanding the effect of friction will help the motor vehicle industry and general industry be able to tighten thread fasteners more efficiently and accurately, and this means you can reduce the weight of the product. For example, if a truck weighs less it consumes less fuel, which is better for the environment.
Are you enjoying your research?
It’s been fun, but I must admit that after five-and-a-half years I want it to be done! Then my next step is working more on this area because I have only just scratched the surface. I want to learn more about the joint itself and move from the joint to the tool perspective as well.
